Part VI: To High Camp, and Beyond
In the early stillness at Middle Camp, the team rests before climbing ever higher. One more camp must be established - High Camp, where climbers will acclimate before pushing off in their bid to reach the summit of Sunflower. 0402_017.jpg (25199 bytes)
0402_019.jpg (45681 bytes) Established on a narrow flat spot high on the eastern face, High Camp is cramped and crowded. After gathering their strength, the climbers drink lots of water and other liquids as they prepare for the summit push.
Preparing for the summit assault, Dick Bettinger laces on his crampons, iron spikes strapped to boots for extra traction on the steep slopes. 0402_018.jpg (56918 bytes)
