Hi! I'm Helen J. Hi! I'm Helen J! I'm 3½,
and I live on Albion Street. My Daddy and Mommy are currently remodeling our kitchen and they are making a BIG mess. There's lots of noise and dust and stuff, and our WHOLE kitchen looks like it is coming apart. Mommy said I could be something call a micro-guide, so I get to show you what it looks like. I made a special crown to let people know I have important work to do - leading my guests around. Please come with me. Don't be frightened!
I like to hug - especially Mommy

1. Here is our kitchen now. It used to be the dining room. That's my Mommy holding me. I love my Mommy. We don't have a stove or a sink in our new kitchen. Daddy has been working on fixing this room since before I was born. My Mommy made the pickles in the jar on the table.

2. This is the ceiling of what used to be our kitchen. Daddy says it will be the kitchen again one day. I don't think Mommy believes him. Lots of wires are hanging out of the ceiling. Can you see where we are replacing the light fixtures? Daddy says that every wire in the house passes through the ceiling - right under the bathtub! Hee hee! That is very silly!
3. Here is where the cabinet over the stove used to be. It also used to go over the `fridgerator. Last Sunday, Daddy, Mommy, Granddaddy and Mr. Stephens worked together to take out that cabinet. Daddy said a bad word when he saw that the people who lived here before us cut a big hole in the ceiling.

Granddaddy is helping fix the cabinet doors. He will make them beautiful. One cabinet was too tall, so Granddaddy is cutting it down. Mommy wants to put a microwave over the stove.

That pipe is a vent that used to be above the stove. It had dead bugs and spiders in it. The silly people who lived here before us had a stupid fan that didn't hook up to this pipe.

4. Here are the cabinets that are next to the stove. You can see the original Formica on the back wall. This stuff is a color called "Poppy". Daddy says this is the same as the kitchen on a show called "The Brady Bunch". I've never seen that show, so I don't know. Mommy was so happy to get rid of this color that she pulled off the Formica with her hands. She laughed in a funny way when she did it. The new counters will be a dark green with a rounded edge. We are going to paint the top cabinets the same color as the stove (which Mommy says is 'Almond'). The lower cabinets will be painted 'Sage Green'. Granddaddy is making new doors for all the cabinets.

5. When Daddy and Mommy pulled up the old flooring in our kitchen, this is what they found. Daddy says this is where the wall to the butler's pantry used to be. Daddy said more bad words when he saw this. The people who worked on this a long long time ago (Mommy says 'in the Seventies") didn't fill the hole in right.

I have to jump across this to get to the bathroom! This hole is kind of scary!

What the kitchen looks like now.

6. Above is a view of the whole kitchen. Daddy says this is the 'Ugly Reality". Everybody is working hard to make big messes. Daddy even found a dead mouse underneath the corner cabinet when he pulled it away from the wall. I didn't see it. Mommy said it was just a skeleton.

Below is a drawing that Daddy made that is 'sposed to show how the kitchen is going to look. It sure doesn't look like this now!

What the kitchen is going to look like.

Yes, since we don't have a kitchen, Mommy and Daddy are accepting invitations to dinner.

Thank you for coming to my house. You are welcome.
