Last fall and winter, two
casts of Up With People were engaged in a record-breaking tour of Mexico. Between
September 1980 and February 1981, Cast C and D performed for 460,000 people in 64 cities
in 26 if Mexico's 31 states. |

In Mexico City,
prominent sponsorship by Banca Serfin, one of the largest banks in Mexico, helped Up With
People achieve an unprecedented level of success. Banca Serfin also hosted the first-ever
joint performance by two casts outside of the United States. The 3,000 seats of Auditorio
Juan de Barrera were filled with the leaders of Mexico City's business, industrial,
social, and government communities. |

Members of Cast D also
had the opportunity to meet former president Miguel Alemán when he received Up With
People President J. Blanton Belk and the cast in the courtyard of his office. After
listening to a few Up With People songs, Mr. Alemán told the cast, "You are doing
the most important thing that can be done in today's troubled world, that is, to tell
people there is hope, that there is a future, and that you, as young people, are going to
help build it." |
| "...You Gave Us Hope" |
Mr. Alemán's remarks
took on literal meaning to students in Cast D on November 29 during a visit to the small
community of Huajuapán de Leon. On October 24, the state of Oaxaca, and particularly the
village of Huajuapán, were victims of one of the worst earthquakes to hit Mexico in
years. |
